How To Paint An Owl workshops at Artfest 2012.

“A lot of people seem to come up to a blank canvas and not know what to paint. They get stuck. It happened to me all of the time. And then I realized the characters I paint and the layers I create follow a pattern. I’ll share this pattern with you step by step, starting with the drawing template I use to create my own owl characters, breaking them down into simple lines and shapes, so you can easily create your own!

We’ll go through my painting process layer by layer-beginning with backgrounds, painting our owls, adding embellishments, and creating scene. And I’ll share with you all of the tricks I’ve learned along the way too-what supplies work best, how to make everything fit together, and ways to really make your character and background pop!

We’ll play with all sorts of art supplies (acrylics, pastels, ink and GLITTER!) along with vintage wallpaper, origami paper, sheet music, and journal pages. Feel free to add anything that’s meaningful to you too! I’ve used a copy of the lease to my first apartment, old photos, and pages from my favorite books!

By the time you’re finished you’ll have a gorgeous owl to take home with you and the painting template to get you started again and again! This workshop is intended for anyone and everyone! My intention is to give you a place to begin so that your imagination can wander! Come spend the day at play! I can’t wait to see the amazing owls you create!”

Juliette Crane – an artist without boundaries

US-based artist Juliette Crane is set to take the UK market by storm with her beautiful paintings and unmistakeable style. Her work is well known in the US for its depiction of owls and girls; two characters which are very close to her heart and give her paintings such depth and appeal.

Juliette has been developing her own unique technique since she was five, which has evolved into the multi-layered style she has today and is part of what gives her work such density and emotion. Using spray paints and acrylics as well as water colours and even wax, she will often experiment with new techniques and materials. In this sense she is very much an artist with no boundaries who believes anything is possible.

If she feels like combining it, she does. She will always try something to see if it works, following her instincts and never holds back from telling a story. And it's the layers, story and depth that sets her work apart.

Juliette says: “I think the character is the thing that others most relate to when they see my work so it's very special and I never stop painting it until I get it right. Sometimes that takes layers and layers; a painting can be many different paintings underneath what people see when it's finished. All of those layers become part of its story and I think you can see all of that in the character’s eyes, just like you can when you look at a person.”

Such is the appeal of these characters that Juliette has launched a successful e-course called How to paint an Owl and will shortly launch another entitled How to paint a Girl launched in January 2012. Through these e-courses, Juliette shares her enthusiasm for her subject matter as well as her personal techniques.

Currently Juliette Crane’s products are sold through US stockists and on her etsy site with imminent plans to expand worldwide. Her work is being launched in UK stores, Juliette is already at The Oak Studios in Hampstead, London and there are a few more stockists in the pipeline, which I will keep you posted with.

The Art Market team did an excellent job selecting this year. A brilliant group of artists and designer makers at the shows this November. Sometimes words cannot describe how amazing the work is. So I am going to reveal it in stages, with a few podcasts and photos to allow you to see and make up your own mind.

Next Art Market and showcase is at Huddersfield Art Gallery from Friday 2nd of December 6pm - 10pm Saturday 11 - 10pm and Sunday 4th of December 12 - 6pm

I have been making Jewellery for a few years but only decided to take the brave step forward to sell my work in July 2011. The Art Market will be the launch of my work.

What discipline do you work in?

I work predominately in silver, hand crafting jewellery where each piece is unique. I enjoy rummaging in junk shops and markets for inspiration but also to find original materials for my work. Vintage textiles fascinate me and I love to imprint them into silver, providing contrasting textures and a sense of history for my jewellery. Interest and colour in the jewellery comes from adding old beads. I find the colours in the old beads contrast wonderfully with silver because they are somehow more delicate and luminescent than modern beads.

I am interested in reusing materials and making something that was once treasured, treasured again. My aim is to make someone feel special through my jewellery. I want to get away from the mass market of jewellery, to enable individuals to have jewellery that will stand the test of time and that will be something that can be worn again and again.

What is your favourite piece in your collection?

My cufflinks are my favorite pieces in my collection as they carry special meaning for me. I made a set of cufflinks for my husband to wear when we got married using lace which used to be my grandmothers to imprint onto the silver. I loved how I could use my grandmothers once treasured lace and give it new life and meaning. I have used this design to create similar pieces for my collection.

What exhibitions, shows, events do you have coming up?

I have no plans beyond the Art Market, which will be my first event and launch of my work. I am busy getting everything ready for the market in November but do have a website, which I will develop further afterwards (where future exhibitions, events and shows will be posted)

Not yet. I am hoping to get some advice around this and to set something up soon. I would love to be able to keep people up to date with exciting developments in my work. I am often making interesting discoveries at markets, which either influence my work or can be used to make new pieces. I am exhibiting on the 6^th November. At the moment everything about the art market seems exciting as it is my first time exhibiting (although I have been a shopper there last year). I cannot wait to show people my jewellery and get their response. It is so wonderful when people try on my jewellery (something I always encourage) as it brings it even more to life. I think jewellery takes on new meanings when it is worn and I hope that my pieces become things that people can treasure. I mainly work on my own but relish meeting other people, so I am looking forward to meeting other crafts people and lovers of design.

Favourite piece: I have just sold my favourite piece - 'Yellow Corner'- during the HOST weekend. More favourites are being made!!

My work hasn't been in the public realm much recently and The Art Market is a kind of relaunch for Karen Howarth Ceramics. I am really looking forward seeing what response the work receives and hoping, of course, to make sales.

Extra Info: I work as a creative practitioner at Linthwaite Clough Junior, Infant and Early Years School, Huddersfield. Working with small groups we produce work of a high quality and the children experience many different aspects of ceramic techniques and processes. In May of this year a selection of the work was exhibited at Huddersfield Art Gallery which was a great experience for the children. Working with the children in this way is a two way learning process and my recent work has developed to some extent from my experience of teaching. Examples of the work I do in school can be seen on my website.

I work from my home studio in Nottingham.

I graduated in 2005 but began to seriously pursue my art and craft in 2007.

What discipline do you work in?

I would call myself a mixed media artist in that I work in a range of disciplines – I paint, sculpt and sew and am always eager to try new ways of working in order to bring my ideas and imaginations to life. I don’t put limits on the materials I work with or the skills needed to make my work – I come up with an idea and then figure out the best way to create the piece even if it means learning a completely new skill – I enjoy the problem solving aspects of art and craft.

What is your favourite piece in your collection?

Oh it is so hard to pick one favourite piece although it is usually whatever I am currently creating. I am particularly fond of my clay characters as they have such a life of their own but I also love the recent paintings I have been working on. My clay characters are soon to have wee dwelling places which will be used to display them. I am also working on a couple of larger pieces which will be strung marionettes. I am excited to be trying out new ideas in my current work and as always there is the whimsical and melancholy atmosphere at the heart of it.

What day are you doing theart market on, and what are you looking forward too the most?

I'm attending the ArtMarket on the 13th of November and I'm most looking forward to seeing peoples reactions to my work up close and personal. I can't wait to see people pick up and hold my work and see their reaction when I tell them that it's all cut by hand! Oh and as it's my first craft fair I'm really looking forward to seeing everyones work and meeting people.

My ‘Cometbox’ locket – it really gave me a difficult time making it, I took it apart and put it back together three times before I was absolutely happy with it – I think the pieces that are the most challenging are ultimately the most satisfying!

What day are you doing The Art Market on, and what are you looking forward too the most?

I’m doing the first weekend the 6^th of November, and I’m looking forward to reconnecting with folks I’ve met there before, and trying out my new display, which has had a total revamp!

Anything you would like to add?

I’ve been busy developing work in other materials this year, so in addition to works in copper and silver I’m creating my lovelies in Stainless steel, coloured aluminium and brass. There are lots of new designs too, and some gorgeous, chunky stones being set into many of my pieces too.

I live and work from my home based in Lincoln

Midas contemporary applied arts is the name of my shop here in Lincoln and I specialize in selling design led jewellery, ceramics, glass, textiles and much more. I have had my business for 11 years.

What discipline do you work in?

I have been making and designing non precious jewellery for the past four years.

What is your favourite piece in your collection?

My latest pieces are my favorites and these are printed, die cut bracelets, earrings and necklaces.

What day are you doing The Art Market on, and what are you looking forward to the most?

I am doing the 6th of November and it’s a real treat for me to come to Holmfirth as I used to live there for many years. Not only do I get to sell my own work but I have a chance to catch up with old friends, I cant wait!

Anything you would like to add?

I currently have a range of my printed work for sale at the British Museum as part of the Grayson Perry exhibition, The art of the Unknown Craftsman. I was asked to make a number of pieces using a Batik design that Grayson selected as part of his exhibition which runs until 19^th February 2012.

I’m a Textile Artist based in Holmfirth. I have a studio in the centre of the town: 58 Huddersfield Road to be precise, from there I run creative workshops and evening classes as well as making my Artwork.

I graduated from Goldsmiths College…well let’s just say it was a while ago and received an MA in Textiles a few years afterwards! I’ve always ‘created’ and love to pass on my skills.

Recently I have been flattered by some wonderful comments and awards: so for 2011 I am the Craft & Design Magazine Selected maker: Textiles! Judge Melissa Warren/Textile Artist had this to say;

I rent my studio from an organisation called WASPS (Workshop And Studio Provision Scotland) and they hold national open studios for all the studios they run across Scotland. I had such fun having a good old chat with lots of interesting people last time, I didn’t stop nattering all day and the time just flew by…I look forward to being able to do that again.

I’ve just been accepted to do the British Craft Trade Fair next April www.bctf.co.uk which will be a new experience as I’ve never solely sold to trade.
